Make it stand out

Hi,

I want to talk to you about the health benefits of surrounding yourself with beautiful art, particularly Surf Art and how having beautiful Surf Art in your home or business can actually make you more relaxed, reducing the stress of your daily life. When we focus on beauty, our energy shifts from negative to positive. Specifically then Tokyo Surf Art is one of the most accessible kinds of beauty that we can surround ourselves with in the home.

Surf Art has been around ever since the 1960s when the sport of surfing first took off in Australia and California. When I lived in Australia’s “Surfers Paradise” in the late 1990s I came up with the idea of making authentic miniature surfboards for tourists and as memorabilia for surfers. They were a huge hit and we sold and exported many to Japan. Now many years later I have started a similar but new business in Tokyo with a focus on Surf Art for the small service business. Hence the new name Tokyo Surf Art was born. Tokyo Surf Art covers a full range of framed authentic miniature Surfboards and snowboards available individually and in framed kits. Our website site address, modelstix.com has now become the home of Tokyo Surf Art, beautiful Surf Art designed to make you happy, inspired and contented. Read on, even if you don’t do these sports, and I’ll explain to you just how you too can benefit by coming to love a beautiful, meaningful space filled with authentic Tokyo Surf Art. Yes, Im biased, but Im OK with that. Until you really get to see how stunning the work is, and the important “de-stressing” concept behind it, you may never understand just what you are missing!

Home:

The word “home” is something that is very close to most people’s heart. I have custom built two homes. We all grew up in a home and it’s where the best and worst of our memories lie. Homes can be big or small, temporary or permanent, even a small business space can be home if we make it that way, what ever the case, in this blog my aim is to make your space a positive basecamp and refuge from where you (and your family or customers) can weather the storms of negativity that are, or may be looming.

Life is a beach (and a mountain)

How do you make a space that is significant and unique to you? Keep it simple! As the great outdoors is where we have all evolved from, its no wonder that positivity for natural places such as the mountains and beach has become the very source of all our energy. Surfers and snowboarders understand this well and its an important feeling that we all need to prioritize, preserve and nurture if we are to live a positive, energetic lifestyle.

Simply defined then just what is the surfing/snowboarding lifestyle? In two words it can be described as EASY GOING!  After everything that may pass through your life, the last thing we need is STRESS! The common lifestyle of city people up to the present day is one that continues to be filled with stress. Stress from work, stress from school, stress from our societies high expectations of us, stress from everyday life. Especially for a Japanese, city life is literally stress about everything!!!

So how to slow down? Relax? Settle back down into the calm source of energy that replenishes and recharges us?  Did you ever consider that a space you love can do all of this?

AUTHENTIC SURF STYLE INTERIOR DESIGN

When your lifestyle is “easy going” then your life will flow easily and you will be stress free. Until then that fast paced world will continue. So how to begin? We start with PASSION, an Authentic Surf/Snow Style Interior for your bedroom, living room, entire home or work space.

The Entrance (Genkun)

Obviously the main areas of your space are going to be the most important, but this is  the area where you can set the tone of your surf style interior and provide a warm welcome to family members or customers. Its small thoughtful details like this, the unframed miniature surfboard in our front entrance (see pic below), that remind me of the great Australian beach stories associated with it, and it forms a hint to guests as to what may follow. These small details show that we care about our space, like the wrapping on a gift.

Interior design is about making a statement and the entrance is your first opportunity to do this. The surf style interior entry is a statement about what you care about.

Living Areas

In a nut shell, city spaces are often small and lacking.  So here is how to get creative and go part way to solving this problem. If you are a Surfer or Snowboarder the first step then is to mount all your sports gear on the walls. This does two things: It both saves space and displays the things you love in an honorable way.  Importantly, this focuses your life on the most beautiful things that you appreciate the most, which then paves the way for reducing your stress. You can buy (or make) your own racks for surfboards and snowboards as shown in this picture taken from my home below:

To set this up I made the two black supports from flat metal bars, that I purchased from my local DIY shop, and secured them onto the strongest part of the wall before covering them with soft black rubber. I hung the snowboard with wire and added two floodlights to further highlight the beauty and importance of my favorite matching, red, blue and green playthings. While the style is appropriate for its space you could also have your boards lying completely flat against the wall (see picture below) or you could make a roof rack in your lounge area and secure your goods that way.

In this section of the house I’ve used straps to secure my sons board flat against the wall and you can see that would also work well on the ceiling. The trick to doing this correctly is to know exactly where to secure everything. (To find where there is strong support behind the wall surface simply knock along the wall with your fist to detect a “hollow” or “full” sound from the wall cavity or use a “Stud Finder” device).

Putting up gear (and also Tokyo Surf Art) is much like doing a jigsaw puzzle. Its a matter of finding the right sizes to fit the available space. We are here to help!

In the above picture you can see how the framed “History of Surfing” fits really well with the chosen space.  Its helpful to note that careful consideration of space can go a long way  towards greatly enhancing the beauty of your home and the  reduction of stress for those who live there.

Selecting the right frame color is also a consideration based on the area that the surf art is to be hung. In the below picture I’ve chosen a black frame because I want  my Tokyo Surf Art to stand out among the cluttered notes that my family often put up on the wall beside it.

Filling in bigger open spaces can also be achieved with a collection of individual smaller Surf Art . Don't crowd the space out however as its important to give the individual work “space to breath”.

Small Rooms

In smaller areas of a house or apartment, such as bedrooms, you are likely to have far less space to work with. Use these smaller spaces, such as between doors and bookshelves or the space above a door, effectively, by enhancing it with matching Tokyo surf art frames.

As you can see from these shots you  may come to appreciate a part of your building that would otherwise remain ignored by you. Kids particularly love this kind of thing in their bedroom and if you are a surfing or snowboarding family it certainly encourages this family passion. Even if you are not, the stunning beauty of fiberglass resin over Japanese Washi paper is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face!  Below is a picture of some smaller Tokyo Surf Art (this particular piece is a sample so is not for sale) next to the our International guests bunk bed.

The Washroom

The washroom and toilet in our house are side by side. Instead of putting Tokyo Surf Art in every section of the house in this case Ive just added a touch to the latter. Its obviously important to not overly saturate your design space, as empty areas are also an important aspect of any building interior design.

Besides space considerations, frame matching to suit your decor is also important. In the picture below Ive chosen the thicker wooden frame to match exposed dark grain wood of our roof beams. The light wooden boards in this art piece also match the pine wood bunk opposite it.
